First English class - 10 to 12 years old students

1. OBJECTIVES: Have a first positive contact with the language by leaving the class already speaking some sentences.

2. MATERIAL: board, weather flashcards, small ball

3. INTRODUCTION   (10’)
- Introduce question: HOW ARE YOU? and standart answer: I’M FINE, THANKS. Make students understand the concept or translate them if necessary.
- Introduce questions about the date and answer them on the board:
  * WHAT DAY IS IT TODAY?   TODAY IS TUESDAY (use a calendar to help them understand the day of the week)
  * WHAT’S THE DATE TODAY?   TODAY IS FEBRUARY THE SIXTH, 2018  (use the calendar as well)
  * WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE TODAY?  TODAY IT’S SUNNY  (use flashcards to help showing different kinds of weather: raining, cloudy, cold, hot, windy...)

4. CONTENT   (30’)
4.1- Introduce some basic questions and answers to end up making a small dialog. Make the meaning of the sentences clear for the students.  Use translation only as a last resource for understanding.
  * WHAT’S YOUR NAME?  MY NAME’S _______________
  * WHERE ARE YOU FROM?  I’M FROM _______________
  * HOW OLD ARE YOU?  I’M _______________
4.2- Dialog:
  - Hi! I’m _______________ . What’s your name?
  - Hello! My name’s _______________ . Nice to meet you _______________ .
  - Nice to meet you, too, _______________ . Where are you from?
  - I’m from _______________ . What about you?
  - I’m from _______________ . I’m 11 so I’m in class 2.  How old are you?
  - I’m 11, too.
  - Great! We are in the same class!
4.3- Introduce numbers 1 to 100. At the age of 10/11 the students in general already know the numbers, so it will be more of a review.  If not they should be teach little by little. Considering they already know them, start the BUZZ game: using a small ball to be thrown from one student to another, tell them they are going to count saying the number out loud whenever they catch the ball, but they will say the word BUZZ when it is a multiple of 5.  If any student make a mistake, they should start count all over again, until they manage to go all the way to a hundred, oooopsss to the last BUZZ, I mean.

5. CLOSURE   (5’)
- Ask the question and explain the meaning to the students: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TODAY?  Have them review the topics they’ve just learned and show them how much they can learn in a class.
- Finish the class by saying something like: THAT’S IT FOR TODAY! SEE YOU NEXT CLASS! GOODBYE!
