If you watch something that is very long and boring, you can say it is like watching paint dry.
Examples
My girlfriend loved the Les Miserables movie, but I hated it. For me, it was like watching paint dry.
The chancellor's budget speech is on TV later. It'll be like watching paint dry!
I hate it when football is on the television, it's like watching paint dry.

Take note

If you paint the town red, you go and celebrate without control.

Interesting fact

Brazilian graffiti artist Eduardo Kobra created a 56m tall artwork, pictured above, in the financial district of São Paulo. The artwork is a tribute to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who died in December 2012.

If something is a long shot, it is very unlikely to happen.
Examples
I'm looking for a first edition of Alice in Wonderland for my mother's birthday. I know it's a long shot, but do you have one in stock?

My favourite football team is in the cup final at the weekend. I think we could win, but it's a long shot.

We could ask the company to replace your broken smartphone for free. It's a long shot, but it's worth trying.

Take note

If you take a shot in the dark, you guess at something.
A: How old do you think I am?
B: I'll take a shot in the dark and say 40.

Interesting fact

There are seven different types of shot in the game of tennis: the serve, forehand, backhand, volley, slice, smash and lob. They are named after the manner in which they are struck or the point in the game at which they are struck.

Chintz! / Chita!

It's cheap, it's colorful, it's happy.  It's chintz!  Have a look at some ideas to use chintz to make your home more cheerful: as cushions on the floor, as wallpaper for a focus point and also as upholstery for seating furniture. Why don't you have a go!?!

If something is 'sky-high', it has reached a very great or high level.
Examples
Train fares have gone sky-high. I spend half my pay just getting to work!
The prime minister's popularity was sky-high after he cut taxes for everybody.
I'd like to buy a house in the city but prices are sky-high.

Take note

If you say that 'the sky is the limit', it means that anything is possible.
If you have talent and work hard, the sky is the limit.

Interesting fact

Ski jumping originated in Norway in 1809. The first ski jumper, Olaf Rye, travelled 9.5 metres before landing. Ski jumping has been part of the Olympic Winter Games since the first Games in 1924.

Little room / Pouco espaço

There's little room because you live in a flat, but you can still have some green in your tiny balcony.  Get inspired by this vertical garden: it doesn't take much space, but for sure will bring some nature into your environment!

If something is 'on the nose', it is exactly right. The phrase is often used when talking about numbers or money, as shown in the examples.
Examples
A: How much do you think my new TV cost?
B: £300? 
A: Yes, on the nose! It cost £300.

A: Your mother must be about 60 years old?
B: You got it on the nose. She's 60. But I don't think she looks that old.

Take note

Get up someone's nose. If someone or something gets up your nose, it annoys you.
Mary is always talking about her wonderful prize-winning dog. To be honest it gets up my nose.

It gets up my nose when people play their music loudly on public transport.

Interesting fact

A 'mahout' is someone who keeps and drives elephants for a living. Traditionally, mahouts are paired with elephants when both are at a young age and they grow up together, in many cases forming a lifelong bond.

El secreto de sus ojos

"El Secreto de Sus Ojos" (The Secret in Their Eyes - 2009) is a Spanish/Argentinian co-production and an Oscar winner film - Best Foreign Language Film 2010.  It is a well done mix of mystery, romance, persistence, love, friendship, reality and it is also sprinkled with some comedy.  It is mostly unpredictable, striking and so truthful and enjoyable. It was so much worth it watching this amazing movie!
"O Segredo dos Seus Olhos" (2009) é uma co-produção Espanhola/Argentina e um filme ganhador de Oscar - Melhor Filme em Língua Estrangeira 2010).  É uma mistura bem feita de mistério, romance, persistência, amor, amizade, realidade e também é salpicado com um pouco de humor.  É principalmente imprevisível, impactante, e tão verdadeiro e gratificante.  Valeu muito a pena assistir a esse filme surpreendente!
