This film is set in Germany during the Second World War. The main characters are a German boy named Jojo, his mother and a Jewish girl. Because of his innocence and young age, Jojo was convinced that Hitler is a hero that will make Germany a great country and that Jews are not human beings, but evil creatures with supernatural skills used to destroy all German’s good values. In this mix of naivety and indoctrination, Jojo even turns Hitler into an imaginary friend. However, everything changes when he discovers a Jewish girl hidden in his attic. He starts to believe that his mother works for a resistance group so, to protect her, Jojo agree to keep the Jewish girl safe. As it is expected, as Jojo gets to know the girl, he realizes that everything that he learned about Jewish people is wrong, and starts to disagree with his imaginary friend (that always tries to give questionable advice to Jojo).
The film is a balanced blend of comedy and drama. A satire that knows how to criticize the nazi regime and the totalitarian governments with humor. In this movie, we can see how ridiculous Hitler and his ideas were, but how dangerous they were as well.
eram.
