O livro "A caverna" de José Saramago, autor ganhador do Prêmio Nobel de Literatura de 1998, traz a história de um artesão em idade avançada que vê seu artesanato ser substituído pela produção em massa.  O homem também se vê prestes a ser obrigado a se mudar de sua casa no campo e ir morar com sua filha na cidade.  É uma leitura que vale muito a pena por suas reflexões sobre a sociedade de consumo e o culto a tudo que ela traz consigo.

Repostagem: Amor a toda prova

Nessa comédia divertidíssima (2011), Carl Weaver, um homem de família de quarenta anos, que se casou com sua namorada de colégio, se vê prestes a se separar ao descobrir a traição da esposa que não mais quer continuar o casamento.  Ao longo do filme Carl tenta voltar ao universo dos solteiros, sem o menor jeito após tantos anos casado.  Daí ele conhece Jacob Palmer, um "bon vivant" e garanhão que tenta ajudá-lo a encontrar uma nova namorada.  Muito bom!!!

If you say there are plenty more fish in the sea, you mean that there are other choices in a situation. It is often said to comfort someone who has just had a romantic break-up.

Examples:

Mary was not a good wife. Don't cry about her. There are plenty more fish in the sea.

Stop flirting with my boyfriend and find someone else! There are plenty more fish in the sea.

Take note

If you fish for compliments, you try to make someone give you praise, often by criticising yourself.

Example:

Ann: I'm not very good with children.

Sue: No, don't be silly. You are a great babysitter.

Tony: She knows that. People in the neighbourhood are always asking her to take care of their kids. She is just fishing for compliments.

Interesting fact

Overfishing is changing the type of fish in the sea, according to scientists at Bangor University. Because larger fish are being caught, they cannot pass on their genes to a new generation. As a result, only smaller fish are surviving.

When someone says two wheels are better than four they mean riding a bike is better than driving a car.

Examples:

If you want to get healthy, get out of your car and onto your bike; two wheels are better than four!

The traffic is really bad in the city so two wheels are definitely better than four.

Take note

A two-for-one offer or promotion in a shop means you can buy two of the same products but pay the price of just one.

Example:

I hope you like eating cabbage; I got them on a two-for-one offer at the supermarket, so we've got lots to eat.

The world-famous Tour de France is a 3,400km cycling race around France. It is one of the toughest endurance races in professional sport. This year the 100th Tour de France was won by British cyclist Chris Froome, who got to keep the famous yellow jersey.

Luminárias de barbante!

Recentemente fiz um passeio em Lumiar e São Pedro da Serra, em Nova Friburgo RJ, e amei os lugares e sua oferta de objetos artesanais para a casa. Fiquei especialmente apaixonada pelas peças produzidas pelo artesão Rubem Eiras*, em ferro e barbante. Sua simplicidade e ainda assim singularidade e beleza rústica me encantaram e não consegui adquirir menos de 3 peças! As luminárias atenderam ao que eu procurava já havia um tempo, em particular a mais vertical, que estando na cômoda ao lado da minha cama, ilumina sem atrapalhar minha visão, quer quando estou sentada ou ao me deitar. Em uma próxima oportunidade quero uma de pé, para colocar no chão em um cantinho da sala, para obter uma iluminação intimista e agradável.
